In the past, it was simply used for practices and not for larger presentations because it did not produce sound that was loud enough. It produces sound by using tangents, small metal blades, to strike the strings. The name of clavichord derives from the Latin clavis which mean key and chorda which means string of a musical instrument. Compared to the saxophone s, the cone-shaped bore of the octavin has a smaller taper. Construction It has a similar shape with the bassoon with two parallel divisions attached at the base. A bell made of metal is at the top of one division and the mouthpiece is fastened to the other division s top. It is constructed with wood and the only metal section is the bell. History The first electric string bass that is also similar to the modern bass was invented by Paul Tutmarc of Washington around 1930. It was a fretted instrument which was constructed to be played horizontally. In the 1940 s, Bud Tutmarc, son of Paul Tutmarc, marketed the bass guitar under the brand name Serenader and advertised it nationwide. The banjo gained its name as an accompaniment of United States music during the First World War. Four-string banjo There are three major types of four-string banjos plectrum banjo, tenor banjo, and cello banjo. The plectrum banjo is just like the regular banjo but it does not have a short drone string. The strings all have the same length so variation in pitch is either accomplished by different sting thickness or by different sting tensions. The strings are made of gut. Gut is a cord made from the natural fiber in the animal intestines walls. The string with the deepest note is placed farthest away from the player. The lowest tones that could be heard from these are in the range of 70 to 100 Hertz. Ceremonial presentations One of the most popular rituals in Arnhem Land is the Narra ritual. Its songs are commonly accompanied by large paired sticks that are slowly beaten. Due to the towering ceremonial status of the Narra rituals, some may believe that songs accompanied by the didgeridoo are younger that Narra songs.
