There are times that the player has to cut a note by releasing a key just before it completes its full sound. There are also instances wherein the player has to omit a note but this is quite rare. Thus, skill and technique is needed when consecutively playing fretted notes because there is a big chance of producing unwanted sound when overlaps happen. A skilled castanet player has very swift movements with castanets which produce great rhythm counterpoint for dancing like the Flamenco dance or for accompanying other instruments. Structure A set of castanets looks similar to two small chestnut shells or clamshells. Actually, the term castanet is derived from the Spanish word castanuelas which means little chestnuts. Structure Crumhorns are made of wood which was hollowed, packed with sand, and closed. The bottom is steamed to become soft and bent to form a J shape. The bell is then hollowed out to be conical with the goal of increasing volume and sound production. The reed is made of cane. This cane is folded and attached to a short tube called staple which is placed in the wooden pipe s top. The body has another crossbar which transfers the strings vibrations. The strings all have the same length so variation in pitch is either accomplished by different sting thickness or by different sting tensions. The strings are made of gut. Gut is a cord made from the natural fiber in the animal intestines walls. Parts The basic parts of the snare drum are the rim, head, drumsticks, snare switch, tension screws, snares, and stand. The rim is the circular edge or lining where the head and other parts of the snare drum are attached. The head is the stretched animal skin or mylar plastic which produces sound when struck with the drumsticks. Trompone is the Italian for sackbut and this is most probably the basis of the word trombone. At first, there were four types of trombones soprano, bass, tenor, and alto. At some period in the 19th century, trombones were constructed with valves similar to most brass instruments but this was short lived.
